Felts Field (formerly the Parkwater Airstrip) was Spokane’s first airfield, with landings beginning as early as 1913. It was the center of local commercial aviation until superseded by Geiger Field (now Spokane International Airport) in 1946. Since then, Felts Field has acted as a major general aviation hub. A new control tower, terminal, and cafe were added in 1968.
Felts Field has one water runway, designated 3W-21W, on the adjacent Spokane River. Aviation charts show the runway snaking along the river with a total length of 6000 feet, with only the last 3000 feet or so aligned roughly with 210 degrees magnetic. Aerial photos show two float plane docks and a seaplane ramp on the river. Unfortunately, none of the ramp, docks, or runway appear in the simulator.
This add-on implements the float plane docks and seaplane ramp. One dock has a static X-cub on floats while the other is free for docking, and also has a float plane parking space. The water runway has been added, with the length limited to the last 2789 feet aligned along 210 degrees magnetic. You can use the rest of the designated 6000-foot length for taxi and approach to landing. A new taxi road has been added, connecting the seaplane ramp to runway 4L-22R across from taxiway Delta. You can follow the taxiway to the airport facilities. The hill to the runway is a bit steep, so be sure to use a shot of power to make it to the top. And, of course, don’t forget to contact ground before heading up the hill!
The segmented circle and windsock are missing in the sim and have been added. The Gonzaga University boathouse and docks have also been implemented. Sailplane trailers double for scull trailers (I couldn’t find any existing racing shells in the simulator, so you’ll have to use your imagination a bit!)
This add-on is compatible with version 1.3 of the KSFF add-on by FreakyD (found here on flightsim.to). That wonderful add-on implements the tower, terminal, cafe, and the large clock adjacent to the ramp. (The screenshots were taken with the FreakyD add-on. You can see the tower and terminal in the distance.)
NOTES
To install the airport update, unzip and place the folder titled "mulberrywing-airport-ksff-spokane" in your community folder. You can add this folder together with the FreakyD KSFF folder without conflict.
To see the float plane docks you will need to download the Seaplane Asset Library from flightsim.to and place it in your community folder. Many thanks to 30West for providing this great library!
