This is my attempt to improve upon DC Design's F-14 by updating the roughmets (comp files) and adding custom weathering based on real-life photos.
Further texture improvements will continue to be made in the future.
I have seen many F-14's and F/A-18's in real life and other than the USAF Thunderbirds or USN Blue Angels, most line jets are NOT as glossy as they appear in the sim. I have already made some updates to the the Asobo Super Hornet but it was time to tackle the big fighter jet, F-14 Tomcat.
The real life jets are clearly not as shiny/glossy as in the DCD original package. I have made subtle changes to the roughmets to improve the overall look and make it resemble close to real life. I have cheated a bit as I have used some roughmet lessons from the beautiful F-14 in DCS.
It's still far from perfect but I personally think it is much improved. If you agree with me, then feel free the use my updated roughmet files and replace the ones in DC Design's original package.
Two repaints are included in this package as well; a VF-103 2004 skin and a fictional RAF skin.
VF-103 Skin:
The squadron operated from Oceana NAS and the skin depicts real life jet AA101.
-Custom Helmets (not necessarily belonging to the timeframe of the skin but go well with the livery)
-Updated Weathering
-Updated Roughmets
-Names of real life F-14 Pilot and RIO (they both flew F-14's in their career although at different times)
-Custom patches including corrected NFO wings
RAF Fictional Skin:
It somewhat depicts the RAF Desert Pink livery from 617 Sqn but once again, RAF never operated the F-14 so some artistic liberties were taken.
-Custom Helmets (I guess RAF doesn't get as fancy as USN but still cool enough in Olive Drab)
-Custom and Correct Patches with correct wings
-Correct names of actual RAF Pilot/Navigator
Enjoy and as always, GO NAVY!
Instructions:
Drop the folders labeled "VF-103 Jolly Rogers Matte Black" and "F-14A RAF" into your community folder.
If you like the matte/less glossy look of my jets, then replace the DC Design's original comp files (located in the F-14A common folder) with my updated comp files (these are the files with the word METALLIC in the title, so DCD_F14_NOSE_METALLIC.PNG.DDS for example)
Finally, there is no monetary gain for me in this and I DO NOT accept personal livery requests. If you want a livery, put it in the request section and if it strikes my fancy, I will create it but there are tons of talented skinners who can tackle your request if it's submitted in the correct area. Do not email with personal requests as your email will be ignored. Not trying to be an rude but the sheer volume gets annoying.
is this a design or is this a jet that i can fly for free?
